As some have heard, the Medicare Qualified Individual (QI) program expired on June 30, 2008. The state of Arizona continued to provide the benefits to current members even though the federal funding was gone.
Good News! The House of Representatives and Senate just passed a bill allowing the program to be continued until December 31, 2009. BUT here’s the catch! The QI-1 program is not considered an entitlement program. This means the state is not obligated to provide services to everyone who meets the eligible criteria. Once the state runs out of funding, they will continue to cover the currently enrolled, however they will not accept any new applicants.
More Good News! The state of Arizona is currently crunching the numbers to see how far the federal funding can stretch and are hopeful in continuing the QI program as before. More information will be posted as it comes available.
