There has been a lot of news coverage devoted to Arizona Medicaid lately. For months, state leaders have been debating about how to handle the program, with many republicans, including the governor, pushing to cut Arizona Medicaid significantly. Even the national news organizations have been reporting on Arizona Medicaid, as the cuts proposed to our state program have been quite large when compared to cuts seen in other states. As it now stands, we can expect to see some big changes to Arizona Medicaid that will ultimately keep many Arizonans from qualifying for the program, but these changes will not affect the branch of Arizona Medicaid designed for long-term health care.
Arizona Medicaid has several distinct programs, and the cuts to the program will not be evenly distributed across each of these programs. The biggest cuts will be felt by a branch of Arizona Medicaid called MED, which covers medical emergencies to Arizonans who are uninsured or underinsured. In addition, childless adults will also feel the impact from the cuts to Arizona Medicaid. As to the branch of Arizona Medicaid that covers long-term health care, however, we have yet to see any discussion about cuts to this program.
