Getting on Medicaid in Arizona

By May 16, 2011Uncategorized

When it comes to getting on Medicaid in Arizona, there are a few things to keep in mind.  First of all, Medicaid is a very generic term, meaning that each state has its own Medicaid program with its own name.  In Arizona, we refer to Medicaid as Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, or AHCCCS.  When people talk about getting on Medicaid in Arizona, then, they are probably referring to the AHCCCS program, which provides insurance to needy families.

Within the AHCCCS program, there is another branch of Medicaid that provides long-term care to the elderly and disabled.  This program is referred to as Arizona Long-Term Care System, or ALTCS.  As such, when people talk about getting on Medicaid in Arizona they might also be talking about the ALTCS program, which has eligibility requirements that are altogether different than those that apply to the general AHCCCS program.

There are a couple of big differences between getting on Medicaid in Arizona for AHCCCS health insurance and getting on Medicaid in Arizona for the ALTCS program.  First, unlike ALTCS, AHCCCS health insurance is only available to minor children and to parents of minor children.  And second, unlike AHCCCS health insurance, ALTCS is only available to individuals who need care in a skilled nursing facility or who are at imminent risk of needing care in such a facility.

Both AHCCCS health insurance and the ALTCS program have financial eligibility requirements, meaning that they are only available to applicants whose income and resources fall below a threshold set by Congress.  With ALTCS, however, many people can prepare their finances to help them qualify for the program if and when they need assistance.  In other words, people can improve their chances of getting on Medicaid in Arizona for the ALTCS program by establishing a financial plan.
